Flameworking Glass Beads

Come and explore the world of glass bead-making! From the time you learn to light the torch and melt the glass, you will be guided through a variety of techniques including how to create particular bead shapes such as round or donut shapes, cylinders and bicones. Shop maintenance and safety will be covered. Students will primarily be using borosilicate glass, the new material on the block that allows for beautiful swirls of color. Students will make basic beads, shaped beads, patterns, and learn different ways of applying glass to get different colors.

This class is designed for anyone interested in glass. If you have experience and want more skills, there will be a chance to develop individual projects.

In this 2-day evening workshop, students will learn fundamental metalsmithing techniques to help begin their journey of metalsmithing and creating bench fabricated jewelry! Over the course of the two sessions, students will learn how to create prong and bezel stone settings, solderings, and finishing techniques. For the first project, instructor, Jessica Keemer, will show students how to create a custom prong setting using sterling silver wire and sterling silver tubing to create a one of a kind setting for a quartz drusy stone. The second project will be focused on forming and stamping techniques to create a unique bangle with a bezel set stone.

Tools and machinery used will include jewelers saw frame, Acetelyne/air torches, Foredom flex shaft, metalsmithing hammers, mandrels, and polishing equipment.

Copper sheet metal will be provided for test pieces. Sterling silver and stones for the final projects are included in the tuition.
